Unburden Privacy Policy
At Unburden, your privacy and emotional safety matter. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and the services that help the app work. Unburden is a peer-support and self-help app for bullying — it is not a medical device and does not diagnose or treat any condition. By using Unburden, you agree to this policy.
1. What We Collect
- Account information: email address (and name if provided) when you register with email, Google, or Apple.
- Profile details: name, age, guardian phone number, and guardian email address for safety features.
- Journal entries: text you write or dictate, stored on your device (local storage).
- Chat messages: messages you send to Ray during a session for support responses and safety checks.
- Usage content for safety: if crisis-related language is detected, limited message context may be included in a guardian alert email.
- Optional device permissions: microphone and speech recognition when you choose voice input for journaling.
2. Not Medical Advice or Diagnosis
Unburden, including the Ray chatbot, the Questionnaire, the Journal, and every Information Module article, provides peer support and educational content only. Nothing in the app is a diagnosis, a medical opinion, therapy, or treatment.
3. Who Can Use Unburden
Unburden is rated for users age 12 and up. To create an account and use login-protected features (Chatbot, Journal), you must be at least 12 years old and provide a trusted guardian's phone number and email address, which we verify before those features unlock. If you are under 18, you should have a parent or guardian's knowledge and involvement in your use of this app.
4. Anonymous Access
You can use some parts of Unburden with only a nickname (no account):
- Games and Self-Care / meditation features
- Questionnaire (“Are You Being Bullied?”)
- Information Module educational articles
Nickname data is stored on your device and is not required for those anonymous areas beyond personalization.
5. Login-Protected Features
- Journal: entries are saved locally on your device and linked to your user ID. They are not uploaded to Firebase by default.
- Chatbot (Ray): provides emotional support. Ray is an AI companion, not a human, and messages are processed to generate replies and for safety screening. Chat is not intended as medical advice or therapy.
- Daily Challenge: progress may be stored locally on your device.
6. Safety Alerts
If the app detects language that may indicate self-harm, harm to others, or serious distress, Unburden may email the registered guardian using our support email service.
7. How We Use Service Providers
We use trusted third parties to operate Unburden:
- Firebase (Google): Authentication and Cloud Firestore for accounts and profile data. Learn more: Firebase Privacy & Security.
- Google Sign-In: optional account login method. Learn more: Google Privacy Policy.
- Sign in with Apple: optional account login method. Learn more: Apple Privacy Policy.
- Groq: AI processing for chatbot replies, journal tone/emotion helpers, and safety classification. Message text may be sent to Groq to provide these features. Learn more: Groq Privacy Policy.
- Email (SMTP / Gmail): guardian verification OTPs and safety alert emails, sent through Google's Gmail service.
8. Data Storage & Retention
- Account/profile data: stored in Firebase until you delete your account.
- Journal entries: stored locally on your device until you delete them or delete your account.
- Chat: processed for the active session and related safety features; not kept as a permanent public feed.
9. Data Security
We restrict access to your account and guardian data so that only your own signed-in account can read or change it. Guardian alert emails and verification codes are sent over encrypted connections. No method of storage or transmission is 100% secure, but we take reasonable steps appropriate for the sensitivity of this information.
10. Permissions
- Internet: required for login, chatbot, AI features, and email alerts.
- Microphone & Speech Recognition: optional, only for voice-to-text journaling.
11. Children’s Privacy
Unburden is intended to support young people age 12 and up, and their families, dealing with bullying. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 12, and login-protected features require entering an age of 12 or older along with a verified guardian contact. Sensitive features require an account and guardian contact details for safety. We do not knowingly sell children’s data. Parents/guardians can request account deletion using in-app Delete Account or by contacting us. If we learn that we've collected information from a child under 12 without appropriate guardian involvement, we will delete that information promptly upon request.
12. Your Choices & Account Deletion
You can update profile details in the app. You can permanently delete your account from Profile → Delete Account. You may also contact us to request a copy of your data or ask questions about what we store.
13. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy as Unburden changes. If we make material changes, we will update the effective date above and, where appropriate, notify you in the app. Continued use of Unburden after a change means you accept the updated policy.
